Balancing Success and Intimacy: The Importance of Black Women CEOs Removing Their Boss Hat at Home

Did you know? The percentage of new female CEOs reached a record in January 2022 when it stood at 27.1%. The previous record was reached in September 2021, when 26.9% of new CEOs were women. In absolute numbers, 1,042 of all new CEOs in 2021 were women compared to 962 in the same period of 2022.


Once upon a time in a bustling city, I had always been fascinated by the power of human connections and the beauty that could emerge from extraordinary relationships.  One day, while reflecting on my own experiences and observing the challenges many black women faced in building and maintaining healthy relationships, I had an insight. I realized that I wanted to use my knowledge, experience and expertise to make a positive impact on black women’s lives by helping them create extraordinary relationships.

With my vision in mind, I decided to start my own business, which I named “Marshaun Olaniyan Consulting ” to provide guidance, support, and resources to black women seeking to enhance their relationships and deepen their connections.

In today’s rapidly evolving corporate landscape, Black women are shattering glass ceilings and rising to the ranks of CEOs, proving their undeniable prowess as leaders. However, the journey to success comes with its own set of challenges, especially when it comes to striking a balance between professional achievements and personal relationships. As these remarkable women step into their roles as CEOs, it’s essential for them to shed their boss hats once they arrive home to their partners. This shift can foster healthier relationships, promote emotional well-being, and enhance overall life satisfaction.


The demands of a high-powered corporate position can be all-consuming, often leading to long work hours, high stress levels, and limited personal time. In the midst of overseeing teams, making critical decisions, and navigating boardrooms, it’s easy for a CEO to maintain an authoritative demeanor even after leaving the office. However, transitioning from the boardroom to the living room requires a conscious effort to switch gears and embrace a different role.


 In this journey we call life, we encounter various experiences that shape our perspectives and emotions. As a black woman, your existence is entwined with a unique set of challenges, opportunities, and triggers that can profoundly influence your relationships. Understanding and acknowledging these triggers is vital for cultivating healthy connections and nurturing personal growth. 

For a CEO who is also a partner, removing the boss hat at home can help create a space where vulnerability, empathy, and intimacy can thrive. A CEO may be accustomed to making tough decisions and asserting authority, but these traits can hinder meaningful connections with loved ones if they persist in personal relationships. By allowing oneself to let go of control and express vulnerability, a CEO can establish a more genuine and fulfilling bond with their partner.


Furthermore, wearing the boss hat constantly can lead to burnout and emotional exhaustion. Black women CEOs face unique challenges due to intersectionality, and it’s crucial for them to have a safe haven where they can recharge and be themselves without the weight of their professional responsibilities. Taking off the boss hat provides an opportunity for self-care, fostering emotional well-being and maintaining a healthy work-life balance.


Balancing professional success and personal intimacy is not an easy feat, but it’s an essential one. By shedding the boss hat at home, Black women CEOs can foster stronger relationships, preserve their emotional well-being, and create a harmonious blend of success and happiness. It’s a testament to their adaptability and strength that extends beyond the boardroom, proving that true success encompasses both career accomplishments and the nurturing of deep, meaningful connections.
